Ummadığın Taş Baş Yarar. On its face, these words can literally be taken to mean, “The stone you don’t expect can hurt your head.” But like many Turkish expressions, it can be interpreted in different ways. It doesn’t have to involve pelting someone with rocks. If someone couldn’t figure out a solution to a problem, a wiser person might say, “Ummadığın taş baş yarar.” It would be taken to mean, “Are you looking in the right place for your answer?” And the words could maybe inspire a search for the “stone” or “taş” beneath which the key to a problem lay hidden.
The expression could also mean don’t overlook the small things because that’s where trouble may come from. And those words might hold true when it comes to reviewing a contract. When experienced attorneys review a contract, they will sometimes start toward the end and work their way to the front. That’s because the end of the contract is where things could be hidden. This is especially true when the things are in small, small print.
The next time you’re reviewing a contract for something important in your life, whether a large purchase or a project you’ll be working on, look at the fine print carefully. Look for terms about what country’s laws apply. Look for terms about which country’s courts will hear a dispute. Look for penalties for late completion. Look for terms about money damages if you can’t deliver. No one likes to think of such details when things are going smoothly, but if things turn bad, those little things that were easy to overlook can become important. As they say, “Ummadığın Taş Baş Yarar.”
